Our Heritage

The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, also known as the Indian Orthodox Church, was founded by St. Thomas, the Apostle of India, in the year 52 A.D and its Primate is H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, the Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan. It belongs to the family of the Oriental Orthodox Churches in the Christian World. The St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Church Tamworth is part of the Diocese of Asia Pacific of the Malankara (Indian) Orthodox Syrian Church.

As the diaspora expanded, the church formed the Madras Diocese in 1979, with its spiritual authority encompassing Tamil Nadu, Andaman Nicobar Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Singapore.

With church members migrating to cities in Australia, including Melbourne and Sydney, a need for spiritual nourishment arose.

The collective efforts of Malankara Church believers residing in Tamworth, NSW, Australia, first Holy Qurbana was celebrated on December 16, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Tamworth. This marked the formation of a new congregation.

The first Parish Assembly of St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Church Tamworth held on February 26, 2025 officially named the New Parish after Saint Thomas as St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Church Tamworth and it is a Parish of Malankara (Indian) Orthodox Syrian Church, within the Diocese of Asia Pacific which is lead by H.G. Dr. Yuhanon Mar Diascoros.
